Annual

Portulaca grandiflora, commonly known as Moss Rose, is a vibrant and drought-tolerant annual. This hardy plant features single, brightly colored blooms in mixed shades of red, yellow, pink, orange, and white. Its low-growing, succulent foliage spreads to form a dense mat, making it ideal for rock gardens, borders, or container arrangements. The blooms open in full sun, providing a stunning display throughout the summer months.

Growing Instructions:

1. Light: Portulaca thrives in full sun and requires at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

2. Soil: Prefers well-draining, sandy, or rocky soil. Avoid heavy or clay-based soils.

3. Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

4. Planting: Sow seeds directly in the garden after the last frost, as Portulaca is not frost-tolerant. Alternatively, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.

5. Spacing: Space plants 6-12 inches apart to allow for adequate air circulation.

6. Maintenance: Portulaca is low-maintenance and self-sufficient once established. Deadheading is not required, as it self-cleans spent blooms.

Stratification:

Portulaca seeds do not require stratification. Sow seeds on the surface of the soil without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Press them lightly into the soil to ensure good contact. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs within 10-14 days at temperatures between 70-80°F (21-27°C).
