Annual

Portulaca grandiflora, commonly known as Moss Rose, is a vibrant and drought-tolerant annual featuring lush double blooms in mixed shades of pink, red, yellow, and orange. These ruffled flowers resemble miniature roses and provide a stunning, long-lasting display. The plant’s succulent, low-growing foliage spreads to form a dense ground cover, making it ideal for borders, rock gardens, and containers. The flowers thrive in full sun and bloom throughout the summer, adding bold color to any garden space.

Growing Instructions:

1. Light: Portulaca thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily to ensure maximum bloom production.

2. Soil: Prefers sandy, well-draining soil. Avoid heavy, water-retentive soils to prevent root rot.

3. Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Portulaca is drought-tolerant once established.

4. Planting: Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost or start indoors 6-8 weeks prior. Surface sow the seeds, as they need light to germinate.

5. Spacing: Space plants 6-12 inches apart to allow for spreading and good air circulation.

6. Maintenance: Minimal maintenance required. Portulaca naturally self-cleans spent blooms and does not require deadheading.

Stratification:

Stratification is not required for Portulaca seeds. Simply press seeds gently onto the surface of the soil without covering them, as light is essential for germination. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination occurs, typically within 10-14 days at temperatures between 70-80°F (21-27°C).

With its double blooms and vibrant colours of pink, red, yellow, and orange, Portulaca grandiflora is a perfect choice for creating a lively, low-maintenance garden.
