Heirlooms usually haven't been hybridized for qualities that include shelf life, colour or uniform appearance. They are often 'ugly' with deep cracks and bumps. The colours are variegated and range from deep browns and purples to light yellows, pinks and everything in between.

The variety is an heirloom variety belonging to the beefsteak group of tomatoes, and it is botanically known as either Lycopersicon esculentum or Solanum lycopersicum, 'Black Krim'. Black Krim tomatoes produce fruits with dark maroon colour and green shoulders (the area on the tomato right around the stem); the colours deepen and darken with more sun exposure. Black Krim tomatoes are known for their mildly tart taste with a slightly salty and subtle smoky flavour.

Tomatoes love rich soil. Add some compost when setting out.

  • Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Sow 1/4 in deep and keep soil warm. Transplant into 1 in cells or 2 in pots at 1-2 leaf stage. NOTE: If the plants get leggy due to lack of light, when you transplant them out, bury more of the plant stem. It will not affect the growth and the plant will produce roots along the buried stem. Spacing: 80 cm apart.
  • Staking tomatoes (indeterminate) should be transplanted into 3-4 inch pots.
  • Harden off plants for 4-5 days after risk of frost has passed, then transplant outdoors.
