Full description

Spartan Apple is a classic dessert apple variety developed from McIntosh parentage and valued for its deep burgundy-red skin and crisp, juicy white flesh. The flavor is sweet with mild tartness and rich aromatic notes, making it excellent for fresh eating, juicing, and baking. Trees are moderately vigorous with a compact, upright growth habit and produce heavy crops once established. Spring blossoms are fragrant and attractive to pollinators. Apples grown from seed may not produce fruit identical to the parent tree, but they are well suited for rootstock use, breeding projects, or long-term orchard growing. Spartan apple trees are long-lived and productive when properly cared for.

Full Growing information from seed:

  • Cold stratify seeds before planting (see stratification section)
  • After stratification, sow seeds ¼–½ inch deep in well-draining, moist soil
  • Keep soil evenly moist during germination
  • Germination can take several weeks and may be irregular
  • Provide full sun once seedlings emerge
  • Grow young seedlings in containers or a protected area during their first year
  • Transplant once roots are well developed
  • Trees grown from seed require several years to mature and fruit
  • Regular pruning helps shape the tree and improve airflow
  • Cross-pollination with other apple varieties improves fruit production once mature

Stratification:

Yes. Cold stratification required.

  • Place seeds in a moist medium such as sand, peat, or a damp paper towel
  • Store in the refrigerator for 60–90 days
  • Keep seeds moist and check periodically for mold
  • Sow seeds immediately after stratification is complete

Medicinal properties:

Apples have long-standing traditional uses as a health-supporting fruit. Spartan apples are rich in dietary fiber, especially pectin, which supports digestion and gut health. Apples also contain antioxidants and vitamin C and have been traditionally used to support heart health and overall wellness. While nutritionally beneficial, apples are considered a food-based remedy rather than a medicinal plant.
