Full description

Bartlett Pear, also known as Williams Pear, is one of the most widely grown and beloved European pear varieties. This vigorous deciduous tree produces large, classic pear-shaped fruit with smooth green skin that ripens to yellow and has a sweet, aromatic, juicy flesh. Bartlett pears are prized for fresh eating, canning, baking, and preserving. Trees bloom in spring with clusters of white flowers that support pollinators before setting fruit. While seed-grown trees may not produce fruit identical to the parent, they are excellent for rootstock, breeding projects, or long-term orchard growing. Bartlett pear trees are long-lived and can provide fruit for decades once mature.

Full Growing information from seed:

  • Cold stratify seeds before planting (see stratification section)
  • After stratification, sow seeds ¼–½ inch deep in moist, well-draining soil
  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
  • Germination may take several weeks and can be uneven
  • Provide full sun once seedlings emerge
  • Grow seedlings in containers or a protected area during the first year
  • Transplant young trees once established, spacing generously
  • Trees grown from seed can take several years to mature and fruit
  • Pruning helps establish strong structure and airflow
  • Pollination from another pear variety improves fruiting once mature

Stratification;

Yes. Cold stratification required.

  • Place seeds in a moist medium (sand, peat, or paper towel)
  • Store in the refrigerator for 60–90 days
  • Check periodically to ensure seeds remain moist and mold-free
  • Plant immediately after stratification is complete

Medicinal properties:

Bartlett pears have traditional and nutritional uses. The fruit is high in dietary fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants, supporting digestive health. Pears have historically been used as a gentle remedy for digestion and hydration. They are considered cooling and soothing in traditional food-based medicine but are not classified as a strong medicinal plant.
