Salvia Maroccana - Moroccan Sage (Salvia interrupta) -Non-GMO – Organically Grown – Herb/Flower
Perennial
Description:
Salvia Maroccana, also known as Moroccan Sage, is a striking herbaceous plant native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Renowned for its rich, blue-violet flowers and aromatic foliage, it serves both as an ornamental plant and a beneficial addition to pollinator gardens. The tall spikes of flowers bloom profusely, attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. This low-maintenance sage is perfect for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and containers.
Growing Instructions:
• Light: Full sun (at least 6-8 hours daily).
• Soil: Well-draining soil; prefers sandy or rocky substrates.
• Watering: Drought-tolerant once established. Water moderately but avoid waterlogging.
• Temperature: Thrives in temperatures ranging from 18°C to 28°C (65°F to 82°F). Protect from frost in cooler climates.
• Spacing: Space plants 12-18 inches apart to allow good airflow.
• Height: Grows 12-24 inches tall, depending on conditions.
• Maintenance: Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming. Prune lightly in early spring to promote bushier growth.
Stratification:
To improve germination rates, Salvia Maroccana seeds benefit from cold stratification:
1. Place seeds in a damp paper towel or mix them with moist sand.
2. Seal in a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator at 4°C (39°F) for 4-6 weeks.
3. After stratification, sow seeds directly outdoors in spring, or start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost.
Planting Instructions:
• Indoors: Sow seeds in seed trays with a light covering of soil. Keep at 18-22°C (65-72°F) with consistent moisture. Germination occurs in 10-20 days.
• Outdoors: Sow seeds after the last frost in a sunny location. Cover lightly with soil, as seeds require light to germinate.
Additional Notes:
• Moroccan Sage is deer-resistant and tolerates poor soils.
• Suitable for companion planting in vegetable or herb gardens, as it repels certain pests.
• Harvest the leaves and flowers for use in teas, sachets, or as a culinary herb.
