Full description

Western Columbine (Aquilegia formosa) is a graceful native woodland perennial known for its delicate, nodding flowers in striking shades of red and yellow. The blooms feature elongated spurs and lantern-like shapes that dangle elegantly above soft, fern-like foliage. This species is naturally found in shady forests, along streams, and in moist woodland environments, making it an excellent choice for naturalized and shade gardens.

Highly attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators, Western Columbine brings both beauty and ecological value to the garden. Its airy form and vibrant colours brighten shaded spaces, while its ability to self-seed gently allows it to form natural drifts over time without becoming invasive. It pairs beautifully with other woodland plants and thrives in cool, moist conditions.

This hardy and low-maintenance plant is ideal for shady borders, woodland edges, and native plant gardens, especially in regions with similar climates to its natural habitat.

Full Growing information from seed:

Aquilegia formosa can be grown from seed but requires patience, as germination can be slow and irregular. Seeds can be sown in fall for natural stratification or started indoors with pre-treatment.

To sow outdoors:

  • Sow seeds in fall directly onto prepared soil in a shaded or partially shaded area
  • Lightly press seeds into the soil surface without covering, as light aids germination
  • Allow natural winter conditions to provide cold stratification
  • Germination will occur in spring

To start indoors:

  • Cold stratify seeds for 3–6 weeks in a moist medium in the refrigerator
  • After stratification, sow seeds on the surface of a moist, well-draining seed-starting mix
  • Do not cover seeds; press lightly into soil
  • Maintain temperatures around 15–20°C (59–68°F)
  • Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy
  • Germination may take 2–6 weeks or longer

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant carefully and harden off before placing outdoors. Space plants approximately 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart.

Western Columbine prefers rich, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. Mulching can help retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Deadheading can prolong blooming, though allowing some flowers to go to seed will encourage natural reseeding.

Stratification:

Yes – Cold stratification recommended (3–6 weeks) or fall sow for natural stratification

Medicinal properties:

Aquilegia formosa has limited but notable traditional uses among Indigenous peoples. Parts of the plant were used externally in small amounts for their mild analgesic and soothing properties. It has also been used in very controlled traditional preparations for relieving minor aches and discomfort.

However, it is important to note that Aquilegia species contain toxic compounds and should be used with caution. Internal use is not commonly recommended without expert knowledge. Today, Western Columbine is primarily valued as an ornamental and ecological plant rather than for medicinal use.
