Full description
Springbank Clover ‘Tricolour’ (Trifolium wormskioldii), also known as cow’s clover, is a unique and eye-catching native clover valued for its striking tri-coloured blooms. The flower heads display a beautiful blend of creamy white, soft pink, and deep rose tones, creating a layered, almost ombré effect as they mature. These rounded flower clusters sit atop slender stems above lush, trifoliate foliage typical of clovers.
This perennial species is well adapted to naturalized settings and is an excellent choice for wildflower meadows, pollinator gardens, and restoration plantings. It plays an important ecological role by attracting bees and other beneficial insects while also improving soil health through nitrogen fixation. Its spreading growth habit makes it useful as a low-maintenance groundcover in sunny areas.
Springbank Clover is both ornamental and functional, adding soft colour and texture while contributing to a healthy, biodiverse garden environment.
Full Growing information from seed:
Seeds can be sown directly outdoors in early spring or fall. This species benefits from cool, moist conditions for establishment.
To sow outdoors:
- Prepare a well-drained seedbed and remove competing weeds
- Lightly scarify seeds before planting to improve germination (gently nick or rub seed coat)
- Sow seeds on the soil surface and lightly press in, or cover very lightly with soil (no more than 0.5 cm deep)
- Keep soil consistently moist until germination
Germination typically occurs within 10–21 days under suitable conditions. Once established, plants require minimal care and are relatively drought-tolerant. Space plants about 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart if growing in a managed setting.
This clover prefers moderately moist, well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types. Occasional watering during extended dry periods will support continued growth and flowering.
Stratification:
Cold stratification recommended:
Place seeds in a moist medium in the refrigerator for 2–4 weeks prior to planting to improve germination rates. Scarification before stratification can further enhance results.
Medicinal properties:
Trifolium wormskioldii has been traditionally used by Indigenous peoples of North America for its nutritional and medicinal value. The plant has been used as a mild anti-inflammatory and for general wellness support. Leaves and flowers were sometimes consumed fresh or prepared in infusions.
Like other clovers, it may contain beneficial compounds such as flavonoids and antioxidants, contributing to its traditional use in supporting overall health. It has also been associated with gentle cleansing properties and may support skin health when used in traditional preparations.
While it has a history of traditional use, Springbank Clover is primarily valued today for its ecological benefits, including soil improvement and pollinator support.
