Malope ‘Vulcan’ is a spectacular old-fashioned cottage-garden annual with large, satiny, deep magenta-pink flowers and a distinctive lime-green star-shaped centre. The flowers have a beautiful trumpet-like form and are produced abundantly on strong, branching plants.
Growing approximately 2–4 feet tall, ‘Vulcan’ makes an impressive statement in flower borders, cottage gardens and cut-flower gardens. It is fast growing, easy to cultivate and has a long flowering season. Regularly cutting the flowers encourages additional branching and blooms, making it an excellent cut-and-come-again flower.

Malope ‘Vulcan’ is a hardy annual. It grows quickly from seed, flowers generously during the summer and completes its life cycle in one growing season.
For the strongest plants, best branching and maximum flower production, grow ‘Vulcan’ in a location receiving plenty of direct sunlight. It can tolerate some partial shade, but full sun produces the best flowering.

Malope ‘Vulcan’ is a show-stopping annual flower that brings rich colour and an elegant cottage-garden feel to the landscape.
The large, silky flowers are a deep rose to magenta-pink, with darker veining and a striking bright-green star-shaped centre. The flowers are held on upright, branching stems and are produced freely throughout the summer.
This variety is particularly valuable for cutting. The more flowers you harvest, the more the plant branches and continues producing blooms. Cut flowers when they are freshly opened for informal bouquets and arrangements.
The flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies, making ‘Vulcan’ both ornamental and beneficial to the pollinator garden.
Growing From Seed
Starting Indoors
Start seeds indoors approximately 6–8 weeks before the last spring frost.
- Fill trays or small pots with a quality, well-drained seed-starting mix.
- Moisten the growing medium before sowing.
- Sow the seeds approximately 1 mm deep, or just barely cover them with fine soil or vermiculite.
- Keep the growing medium evenly moist but never waterlogged.
- Place in a warm, bright location.
- Germination generally occurs in approximately 1–2 weeks, although some sources report longer germination periods depending on conditions.
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them carefully into individual pots.
- Grow on in bright light and gradually acclimatize plants to outdoor conditions.
- Plant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.
Allow approximately 30 cm (12 inches) between plants for good air circulation and branching.
Direct Sowing
Malope ‘Vulcan’ can also be direct sown outdoors in late spring, once the soil has warmed and the danger of frost has passed.
Prepare a sunny planting area with loose, well-drained soil. Sow approximately 1 mm deep, cover lightly and keep the area evenly moist until seedlings are established.
Stratification:
No mandatory cold stratification is required.
‘Vulcan’ can be germinated from seed without a required cold-moist stratification treatment. Some growers use a short period of cool conditions when starting seed indoors, but standard cultivation instructions also successfully recommend sowing at approximately 20–30°C, so Bumbleseeds recommends sowing without required stratification.
