Adorable. Edible. Miniature wild pansies! Viola Tricolor, also known as ' Hearts Ease', 'Johnny Jump Ups' and 'Meadow Violets', is an old English favourite for cottage gardens. It is a dainty plant that produces a mix of colors, and has long been used as an edible flowers - sprinkled on salads or desserts! Petals have a delicate flavour and are slightly perfumed.
Edible flowers are also known for their anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and other medicinal properties. Harvest the flowers in the spring and use fresh heartsease petals as a garnish for salads and other meals. Soak the petal in cold water before use and pat dry with a paper towel.
Other medicinal uses: Heart's Ease is also used for speeding up metabolism, soothing sore throat, reducing whooping cough symptoms, and treating constipation. Some people apply heart's ease directly to the skin for dry skin and other skin conditions including dandruff, warts, acne, rash, eczema, and impetigo.
- Start indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost date; sow seeds in trays of compost. Cover the seed and keep the soil moist. Harden off gradually and transplant seedlings outdoors when all risk of frost has passed. OR direct sow outdoors after last frost. Spacing: 6-8 in (15 - 20 cm) apart
