Vegetable – Golden Cayenne Pepper (Capsicum annuum) – Non-GMO – Organically Grown – Vegetable

Annual

Golden Cayenne Pepper is a warm-season annual vegetable. In frost-free climates peppers are botanically capable of living longer, but they are generally grown as annuals in Canadian gardens.

Full Sun

Golden Cayenne thrives with 6–8+ hours of direct sunlight daily. A warm, sheltered location will encourage vigorous growth, flowering and abundant pepper production.

Full Description

Golden Cayenne Pepper (Capsicum annuum) is a spectacular twist on the classic cayenne, producing masses of long, slender peppers that ripen to a brilliant golden yellow.

The peppers typically reach approximately 4–6 inches long, developing their signature curved, tapered cayenne shape.

Don’t let that beautiful golden colour fool you. These peppers pack some serious heat!

Golden Cayenne generally measures approximately 30,000–50,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), delivering the lively, lingering heat cayenne peppers are famous for.

The thin-walled peppers are exceptionally versatile in the kitchen. Enjoy them fresh or cooked, add them to hot sauces and salsas, pickle them, or allow them to fully ripen and dry them for homemade golden cayenne flakes and powder.

Plants are productive and ornamental, with the bright yellow peppers creating a striking display against deep green foliage.

Golden Cayenne is a fantastic choice for vegetable gardens, raised beds, containers and edible landscapes.

Growing Golden Cayenne Pepper from Seed

Golden Cayenne requires a long, warm growing season, so starting seeds indoors is recommended in cooler climates.

Starting Indoors

Start seeds approximately 8–10 weeks before your last expected frost.

Sow seeds approximately ¼ inch deep in a quality seed-starting mix.

Keep the growing medium consistently warm. Pepper seeds germinate best at approximately 24–29°C (75–85°F).

A seedling heat mat can be especially helpful.

Keep the soil evenly moist but never saturated.

Germination generally occurs in approximately 7–21 days, although some pepper seeds can take longer.

Once seedlings emerge, provide strong light for approximately 14–16 hours per day when growing under lights.

When seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant them into larger individual containers if necessary.

Before transplanting outdoors, gradually harden seedlings off over approximately 7–10 days.

Do not plant outside until all danger of frost has passed, nighttime temperatures are consistently mild and the soil has warmed.

Planting Outdoors

Plant seedlings approximately 18–24 inches apart.

Choose the warmest, sunniest location available.

Peppers appreciate warmth, so avoid transplanting too early into cold spring soil.

Soil

Golden Cayenne prefers fertile, loose and well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Keep soil consistently moist during active growth, flowering and fruit production, but avoid waterlogged conditions.

Mulching around established plants can help retain moisture and moderate soil temperatures.

Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, which can encourage lush foliage at the expense of flowers and peppers.

Harvesting

Golden Cayenne peppers can be harvested while immature and green, but their spectacular colour and characteristic flavour develop as they mature to bright golden yellow.

Use scissors or garden snips to harvest peppers rather than pulling them from the plant.

Regular harvesting encourages continued fruit production.

For dried cayenne, allow peppers to fully ripen before harvesting and dry them thoroughly before storage.

Wear gloves when cutting or processing hot peppers and avoid touching your eyes or face.

Stratification:

No – Cold stratification is NOT required.

Golden Cayenne Pepper seeds are warm-season seeds and should not be cold stratified.

Unlike okra, pepper seeds generally do not require pre-soaking either.

For successful germination, the key ingredients are warmth, consistent moisture and patience.

Medicinal & Nutritional Properties

Cayenne peppers contain capsaicin, the naturally occurring compound responsible for their heat.

Capsaicin has been extensively studied for its biological properties and is used in some commercially manufactured topical products.

Golden cayenne peppers also provide naturally occurring vitamin C, carotenoids and other antioxidant plant compounds.

Hot peppers and capsaicin have been investigated scientifically in relation to areas including metabolism, cardiovascular health, inflammation and pain pathways. These areas of research should not be interpreted as evidence that eating Golden Cayenne peppers can prevent, diagnose, treat or cure disease.

Cayenne peppers have also been used historically in a variety of traditional food and herbal preparations.

Golden Cayenne is offered by Bumbleseeds primarily as an edible culinary pepper.
