Full Description
Fiesta Blend Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) turns the vegetable garden into a celebration of colour!
This beautiful open-pollinated blend produces an exciting mixture of green, creamy-white, red and orange-toned okra pods on vigorous upright plants. Because Fiesta is a blend, individual plants will produce different pod colours, creating a spectacular multicoloured harvest.
Plants can reach approximately 3–6 feet tall, depending on growing conditions, and produce beautiful hibiscus-like flowers followed by edible pods.
The young pods are tender with the classic mild, fresh flavour of okra. Harvest them young for the best texture.
Fiesta Blend is delicious fried, grilled, roasted, steamed, sautéed or pickled and is fantastic in soups, curries, stews and traditional gumbo.
The colourful pods are especially beautiful when harvested together, making Fiesta Blend a wonderful choice for home gardeners, edible landscapes and market gardens.
Days to Maturity: Approximately 55–65 days.
Growing Fiesta Blend Okra from Seed:
Okra is a tropical, heat-loving vegetable. Warm soil is essential for successful germination and vigorous growth.
Starting Indoors
For shorter growing seasons, start seeds indoors approximately 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost.
For faster germination, soak seeds in warm water for approximately 12–24 hours before sowing.
Sow approximately ½ inch deep in individual pots or cells.
Keep the growing medium warm, ideally around 21–32°C (70–90°F).
Seeds generally germinate in approximately 7–14 days when sufficiently warm.
Provide seedlings with plenty of bright light.
Okra does not appreciate having its roots disturbed, so handle seedlings carefully when transplanting.
Wait until all danger of frost has passed and both the weather and soil are consistently warm before planting outside.
Gradually harden seedlings off before transplanting them into their permanent location.
Direct Sowing
Fiesta Blend can also be direct-sown outdoors once the soil has thoroughly warmed.
Sow approximately ½ inch deep.
Space established plants approximately 12–18 inches apart.
Allow approximately 3 feet between rows.
Keep the soil evenly moist during germination and while young plants establish.
Soil
Plant in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
Okra appreciates consistent moisture during flowering and pod production but does not like sitting in waterlogged soil.
Once established, the plants are remarkably tolerant of summer heat.
Harvesting
Harvest Fiesta Blend frequently once pods begin developing.
For the most tender texture, pick pods while they are young and approximately 3–4 inches long.
Pods grow surprisingly quickly during hot weather, so check your plants every 1–2 days during peak production.
Regular harvesting encourages plants to continue flowering and producing additional pods.
If pods are allowed to become overly mature, they can become tough and fibrous.
Stratification:
No – Cold stratification is NOT required.
Okra is a warm-season crop and should not be cold stratified.
Instead, Fiesta Blend’s hard seed coat can benefit from soaking the seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before planting.
This helps soften the seed coat and can encourage faster, more even germination.
Medicinal & Nutritional Properties
Okra has been valued as both a nutritious food and a plant used in traditional practices.
The edible pods naturally contain dietary fibre and mucilage, the gel-like soluble fibre responsible for okra’s distinctive texture.
Okra also contains naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plant compounds.
Scientific research has investigated okra and its naturally occurring compounds in relation to areas including digestive health, antioxidant activity and glucose and lipid metabolism.
Various parts of the okra plant have also been used historically in traditional medicinal practices.
These traditional uses and areas of scientific research should not be interpreted as evidence that okra can diagnose, prevent, treat or cure disease. Fiesta Blend Okra is offered primarily as a nutritious edible vegetable.
