Vegetable – Cubanelle Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum) – Non-GMO – Organically Grown – Vegetable

Annual

Cubanelle Sweet Pepper is a warm-season vegetable generally grown as an annual. It loves long, sunny days and warm soil.

Full Sun

Plant in a location receiving 6–8+ hours of direct sunlight each day for strong growth and abundant pepper production.

Full Description

Cubanelle Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum) is a beloved Italian-style frying pepper known for its long, tapered shape, thin walls and wonderfully mild, sweet flavour.

The attractive peppers typically grow approximately 5–7 inches long. They begin a beautiful light yellow-green to lime green, gradually ripening through golden yellow and orange before reaching a rich red when fully mature.

Cubanelle peppers are prized for their tender, thin walls, which make them exceptional for frying, sautéing, roasting and grilling. They’re also delicious stuffed, added to sandwiches and pizzas, chopped into sauces or enjoyed fresh from the garden.

Their flavour becomes progressively sweeter as the peppers ripen.

Cubanelle is considered a very mild pepper, typically around 100–1,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). Many fruits may taste essentially sweet, while an occasional pepper can carry a gentle touch of heat.

Productive plants produce beautiful elongated peppers throughout the warm growing season.

Growing Cubanelle Sweet Pepper from Seed

Cubanelle peppers require warmth and a relatively long growing season. In cooler climates, starting seeds indoors is highly recommended.

Starting Indoors

Start seeds approximately 8–10 weeks before your last expected frost.

Sow seeds approximately ¼ inch deep in a quality seed-starting mix.

Keep the growing medium warm, ideally approximately 24–29°C (75–85°F).

A seedling heat mat can improve germination when indoor temperatures are cool.

Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy.

Seeds generally germinate in approximately 7–21 days.

Once seedlings emerge, provide plenty of strong light.

When seedlings develop several true leaves, transplant them into larger individual pots as needed.

Before planting outdoors, gradually harden seedlings off over approximately 7–10 days.

Transplant only after all danger of frost has passed, nighttime temperatures are consistently mild and the soil has warmed.

Planting Outdoors

Space plants approximately 18–24 inches apart.

Choose a warm, sheltered location in full sun.

Pepper plants appreciate good air circulation while still benefiting from protection against strong winds.

Soil

Cubanelle peppers perform best in fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Keep soil consistently moist, particularly while plants are flowering and developing fruit.

Avoid allowing plants to repeatedly swing between extremely dry and saturated conditions.

Mulching around established plants can help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Harvesting

One of the joys of growing Cubanelle peppers is that they can be harvested at several different stages.

For the traditional Cubanelle appearance and flavour, harvest when peppers are full-sized and pale yellow-green.

Leave them on the plant longer and they will gradually develop yellow, orange and finally red colouring, becoming sweeter as they mature.

Use scissors or garden snips when harvesting to avoid damaging the branches.

Regular harvesting encourages continued production.

Stratification:

No – Cold stratification is NOT required.

Cubanelle Pepper seeds should not be cold stratified.

Pepper seeds need warmth and consistent moisture for successful germination.

Pre-soaking is optional and generally unnecessary. If desired, seeds can be soaked briefly before sowing, but maintaining a warm growing medium is considerably more important.

Medicinal & Nutritional Properties

Cubanelle peppers are nutritious vegetables containing naturally occurring vitamin C, carotenoids and other antioxidant plant compounds.

As the peppers ripen and change colour, their pigment and phytochemical composition also changes.

Sweet peppers have been studied for their antioxidant compounds and their potential contribution to a balanced, vegetable-rich diet.

Because Cubanelle peppers contain very little capsaicin compared with hot peppers, they provide the flavour and nutritional qualities of peppers without significant heat.

Peppers have also been used historically in food traditions around the world as both culinary and traditional plant foods.

These nutritional and historical uses should not be interpreted as evidence that Cubanelle peppers diagnose, prevent, treat or cure any medical condition.

Cubanelle Sweet Pepper is offered by Bumbleseeds primarily as a delicious edible garden vegetable.
