Tomato - Cherry - Matts Wild Cherry (Lycopersicum esculentum var. cerasiforme) Wild Cherry Open Pollinated Tomatoes Vegetable

Annual

Indeterminate

We typically offer mostly heirloom varieties, however, once you taste these little treasures...you will see why we offer the seeds. Matt's Wild Cherry is a cultivar of a wild tomato variety originally native to wild tomato plants from Hidalgo, Mexico. The story goes that these plants were acquired by Doctor Matt Liebman in Hidalgo, Mexico. Dr. Liebman raised this cultivar in the USA , and eventually released this variety under his own name. It is species Lycopersicum esculentum var. cerasiforme. Hence the name. Other stories state it was actually a mexican woman that brought the seeds back to the USA for her family to enjoy...either way, we're happy to offer them here in Canada.

Matt's Wild Cherry is an indeterminate tomato in that it is a climbing vine and it will require staking as the strong vines can grow from 4 to 8 ft long, and will be absolutely covered with hundreds of bite sized bright red cherry tomatoes. The flavour is intense, and they are also early - will continue to yield well up to the first frost.

Tomatoes love rich soil. Add some compost when setting out.

  • Full Sun
  • Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last frost. Sow 1/4 in deep and keep soil warm. Transplant into 1 in cells or 2 in pots at 1-2 leaf stage. NOTE: If the plants get leggy due to lack of light, when you transplant them out, bury more of the plant stem. It will not affect the growth and the plant will produce roots along the buried stem.
  • Germinates 7 to 14 days
  • Spacing: 24 to 36 in apart.
  • Staking tomatoes (indeterminate) should be transplanted into 3 to 4 inch pots.
  • Harden off the plants for 4 to 5 days after risk of frost has passed, then transplant outdoors.
  • Maturity 50 to 55 days
  • Seed Count: 10
