Description:

Telekia speciosa, commonly known as Heart-leaved Oxeye, is a tall, striking perennial native to central and eastern Europe. This plant produces large, daisy-like yellow flowers with fringed petals that bloom from mid-summer to early autumn. Its robust stems and bold, heart-shaped leaves make it a favorite for wildflower gardens and naturalized areas. The plant is highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Growing Instructions:

1. Soil: Prefers moist, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Grows well in loamy soil but tolerates clay if drainage is adequate.

3. Water: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during its active growing period.

4. Spacing: Space plants 18–24 inches apart to allow good airflow.

5. Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to promote growth.

 

Maintenance:

Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming. Cut back the stems to the ground in late fall or early spring for neatness. Divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigor.

 

Stratification Instructions:

Seeds of Telekia speciosa require cold stratification to break dormancy:

1. Mix seeds with a moist medium like sand or vermiculite.

2. Place the mixture in a sealed plastic bag or container.

3. Refrigerate at 34–41°F (1–5°C) for 4–6 weeks.

4. After stratification, sow the seeds indoors or directly outdoors in spring after the last frost.

 

Sowing Instructions:

• Indoors: Sow seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost date. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface, as they require light to germinate. Keep the soil moist at 68–75°F. Germination typically occurs in 14–21 days.

• Outdoors: Direct sow in spring or early autumn. Scatter seeds on the soil surface and press them down gently. Cover with a very light layer of soil.
