This variety of swiss chard belongs to the same species as chard and beets, but has distinct differences. Tastes like a true spinach rather than chard, and the leaves also look like spinach- they are smooth, dark green and flatter; more pointed than chard and has thinner stems. Perpetual! This chard produces throughout the growing season. Harvest as needed.
- Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks prior to last frost date. Sow seeds ½ to 1 inch deep, 2 to 6 inches apart, in starter pots. Once the seedlings are strong enough to handle transplant out into a prepared bed outdoors after last frost has passed.
- Continue planting seeds at 10 day intervals for a month indoors/outdoors and repeat. Chard is best treated as a “cut-and-come-again” crop.
- Direct sow: before direct sowing seeds loosen the soil and add compost and organic fertilizer. Plant the seeds a half inch deep and about 2 inches apart. Seeds should sprout in 7-14 days. Sow seeds 1cm (½”) deep, spaced 10-30cm (4-12″) apart in rows 45cm (18″) apart.
- Prefers full sun and will tolerate light shade in summer; requires loose, deep, and fertile soil rich in organic matter.
- Plenty of consistent moisture is required, especially as plants grow larger.
- Cook the stalks as you would asparagus and the leaves as you would spinach, or enjoy both raw in salads.
