Staghorn Sumac – (Rhus typhina) Non-GMO - Organically Grown - Tree

Type: Deciduous Shrub/Small Tree

Perennial

Description:

Staghorn Sumac (Rhus typhina) is a striking ornamental tree known for its velvety, staghorn-like branches, large fern-like foliage, and vibrant red fruit clusters. It adds dramatic visual interest to landscapes throughout the year, with bright green summer foliage turning to vivid shades of orange, red, and yellow in autumn. Its fuzzy red seed cones persist into winter, providing a food source for birds and other wildlife. This drought-tolerant and low-maintenance plant is ideal for erosion control, naturalistic landscapes, and pollinator-friendly gardens.

Height: 15–25 feet

Spread: 20–30 feet

Bloom Time: Late spring to early summer

Growing Instructions:

Sun Requirements: Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Thrives in well-drained soil and is highly adaptable to poor, sandy, or rocky soils. Prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5–7.0).

Watering: Drought-tolerant once established, but water young plants regularly until their root system is well-developed.

Planting:

1. Plant seeds directly outdoors in autumn or start indoors in late winter.

2. If planting outdoors, sow seeds 1–2 inches deep in well-drained soil.

3. For indoor starts, use pots with a light potting mix and ensure adequate drainage.

Spacing: Space plants at least 20 feet apart to allow room for growth.

Maintenance:

Staghorn Sumac spreads through underground rhizomes and may form colonies. Remove unwanted suckers to control growth.

Prune dead or damaged branches in late winter to maintain shape.

Stratification Requirements:

To ensure successful germination, Staghorn Sumac seeds require both scarification and stratification:

1. Scarification:

Use sandpaper or nick the seed coat with a file to allow moisture to penetrate.

2. Stratification:

Soak scarified seeds in warm water for 24 hours.

Place seeds in a sealed plastic bag with damp sand or vermiculite. Refrigerate for 30–60 days.

3. After stratification, sow seeds as described above.

Additional Notes:

Staghorn Sumac is highly resilient and thrives in challenging conditions. Its fruit can be used to make a tangy beverage similar to lemonade, and its ornamental qualities make it a standout in both urban and rural settings. This tree supports wildlife and is excellent for stabilizing slopes and preventing erosion.
