Verbascum Hoary Mullein (Verbascum pulverulentum) - Non-GMO - Organically Grown - Flower

Perennial

Description:

Verbascum pulverulentum, commonly known as Mullein, is a striking perennial flowering plant that produces tall spikes of bright yellow flowers, making it a standout in any garden. Its silvery-gray leaves have a soft, woolly texture, and its blooms attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. This hardy plant thrives in full sun and can tolerate a variety of soil conditions, making it a great addition to both wildflower gardens and cottage-style plantings.

Height: 2-5 feet (60-150 cm)

Spread: 1-2 feet (30-60 cm)

Flower Color: Yellow

Bloom Time: Summer to early fall

Growing Instructions:

1. Planting Location:

Choose a site that receives full sunlight for the best growth. Verbascum prefers well-drained soil but can tolerate a variety of soil types, including sandy and rocky conditions.

2. Soil Preparation:

While it isn’t overly picky about soil, adding organic matter can help improve drainage and fertility. Ensure the soil is moderately fertile but not too rich, as excessive fertility can encourage more foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

3. Watering:

Mullein is relatively drought-tolerant once established. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish the roots, but avoid overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

4. Spacing:

Space plants approximately 12 to 18 inches (30-45 cm) apart to allow for full growth and airflow.

Stratification & Seed Starting:

1. Cold Stratification:

To encourage germination, cold-stratify seeds by placing them in a moist paper towel in the fridge for 4 to 6 weeks before sowing. This simulates the winter chill and improves germination rates.

2. Direct Sowing:

You can also direct sow seeds outdoors in the fall, allowing them to naturally go through the winter stratification process. Sow seeds on the soil surface and lightly press them into the soil, as they require light for germination.

3. Indoor Sowing:

If starting indoors, sow seeds 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost date. Use a seed tray or shallow container, and lightly cover the seeds with soil. Keep the soil moist but not soaked, and place the container in a cool area with indirect light. After stratification, seeds should germinate in 2-3 weeks.

4. Transplanting:

If starting indoors, transplant seedlings after the last frost date once they have developed strong roots. Harden off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before planting them in their final location.

Care After Planting:

Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pruning: Verbascum doesn’t require much pruning, but you can trim back spent flowers to encourage further blooms and improve the plant’s appearance.

Overwintering: Mullein is cold-hardy and will return year after year, often self-seeding in ideal conditions.

Enjoy the beauty of this unique perennial and its ability to brighten up any garden space with minimal effort! 🌼🌿
