Morning Glory – (Ipomoea tricolor) 'Heavenly Blue' Vine

Annual

Height: 8-10 ft

Lovely fast growing vine with iridescent dark sky-blue 7 cm trumpet flowers that will make any structure, fence or post a feature! Great for cottage gardens, twining up a porch, fence or trellis. Large heart shaped leaves are a great backdrop to the beautiful blooms.

  • Bloom time depends on temperature; blooms will unfurl as the temperature climbs and close up if the sun gets too hot.
  • Stunning blue when they open in the morning and turn to a light pink before they close in the evening.
  • Can reseed itself
  • Attracts bees, moths, beneficial bugs and hummingbirds

Sowing Instructions

1. Timing

  • Outdoors: Sow directly after the last frost, when soil is warm (above 65°F / 18°C).
  • Indoors: Start 3–4 weeks before the last expected frost in biodegradable pots to avoid root disturbance during transplanting.

2. Seed Preparation

Morning Glory seeds have a tough outer coat. To improve germination:

  1. Nick each seed lightly with a nail file or sharp knife.
  2. Soak the nicked seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before sowing.
    • This helps soften the seed coat and speeds up sprouting.
  3. Sowing Depth & Spacing
  • Depth: ¼ inch (6 mm) deep
  • Spacing: 6–12 inches (15–30 cm) apart
  • Germination Time: 7–14 days at 70–85°F (21–29°C)

4. Site & Soil

  • Choose a sunny location—Morning Glory blooms best with at least 6 hours of full sun daily.
  • Prefers well-drained, average garden soil; overly rich soil can lead to lush foliage but fewer flowers.
  • Provide support (trellis, fence, netting) for the vines to climb.

5. Watering & Care

  • Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged until seedlings establish.
  • Once established, water sparingly—Morning Glory tolerates some drought.
  • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers; they encourage leaf growth at the expense of blooms.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming.

6. Transplanting (if started indoors)

  • Transplant carefully once the danger of frost has passed.
  • Handle gently—Morning Glory dislikes root disturbance.
  • Plant the entire biodegradable pot directly into the soil if possible.

7. Growing Tips

  • Ideal for arbors, trellises, fences, and mailboxes.
  • Flowers open in the morning and close by afternoon.
  • Provide moderate watering and full sun for best color intensity.
  • In cooler climates, flowering may start later in summer.

8. Aftercare

  • Once flowering ends, plants will set seed.
  • Allow seed pods to dry on the vine if you wish to collect seeds for next year.
  • Seeds are toxic if ingested—keep away from children and pets.
  • Seed Count: 1 gr
