Leek - Varna (Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum) Non GMO & Organic Varna Leeks Heirloom Vegetable

This is the ultimate summer leek!

Varna is an organic leek variety that is bred for its larger size and excellent flavor. It grows so quickly that it can be harvested at the green onion stage for gourmet baby leeks when planted close together.

  • Full Sun
  • Soil Preparation
  • - Choose a well-draining, loamy soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0.
    - Amend the soil with organic matter like compost to improve fertility.

  • Planting:
Start leek seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost date or sow directly outdoors.

  • Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in a seed tray or directly in the garden, spacing them about 1 inch apart.

  • Transplant seedlings when they are around 6 inches tall, spacing them 6-8 inches apart in rows 12-18 inches apart.

  • Watering:
    - Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods.
    - Leeks prefer consistent watering to ensure even growth.

  • Sunlight:
    - Plant leeks in a location that receives full sunlight for at least 6-8 hours a day.

  • Fertilization:
    - Use a balanced organic fertilizer or compost at planting and side-dress with additional compost during the growing season.

  • Hilling:
As leeks grow, gradually hill soil around the base to blanch the stems. This promotes a tender, white portion.

  • Weed Control:
    - Keep the area around leeks free from weeds, as competition can affect their growth.

  • Pest and Disease Management:
    - Monitor for pests like aphids and onion maggots. Use organic methods such as neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
    - Practice crop rotation to minimize the risk of soil-borne diseases.

  • Harvesting:
    - Harvest leeks when they reach the desired size, usually around 1-2 inches in diameter.
    - Use a digging fork to carefully lift the leeks from the ground.

  • Storage:
    - Store harvested leeks in a cool, humid environment to maintain freshness.
    - Leeks can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks.

Requires starting indoors and transplanting when all risk of frost has passed
