Perennial

Prefers full sun (can tolerate light partial shade)

Full Description:

Stachys byzantina, commonly known as Lamb’s Ear, is a soft, silver-leaved perennial prized for its velvety texture and low-growing, spreading form. Its foliage resembles the shape and feel of a lamb’s ear—thick, fuzzy, and pale silvery-grey—adding contrast and brightness to garden beds. In summer, it may produce upright spikes of small purple-pink flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. Lamb’s Ear thrives in Canada when planted in well-drained soil and full sun, making it a reliable choice for borders, edging, sensory gardens, and drought-tolerant plantings.

Medicinal Properties:

Historically, Lamb’s Ear leaves were used as a natural absorbent bandage, and the plant was valued for its soothing feel. However, it is not considered a modern medicinal herb, and there is no reliable evidence supporting internal medicinal use. It should not be consumed.

Full Growing Information From Seed

  • Start seeds indoors in early spring, as Canadian outdoor conditions warm slowly.
  • Use a well-draining seed-starting mix and gently press seeds into the surface (light aids germination).
  • Keep soil lightly moist—not soggy.
  • Maintain a temperature of 18–21°C (65–70°F) for germination.
  • Germination usually takes 14–21 days.
  • Transplant seedlings into individual pots once they have several true leaves.
  • Harden off seedlings for 7–10 days before planting outdoors.
  • Plant outside once frost risk has passed and soil is workable.
  • Choose full sun and well-drained soil; Lamb’s Ear dislikes wet or heavy soils.
  • Water regularly during establishment, then reduce watering—Lamb’s Ear is drought tolerant.
  • Remove spent flower stalks to keep foliage tidy.
  • Plants spread slowly to form a soft, silvery mat over time.
