Full description:
Jacaranda mimosifolia, commonly known as the Blue Jacaranda, is a fast-growing deciduous tree admired for its stunning, trumpet-shaped lavender-blue flowers that blanket the branches in spring and early summer. Native to South America, this ornamental tree has fern-like foliage and a graceful, spreading canopy that provides dappled shade. Its vibrant floral display and elegant form make it a standout feature in landscapes, streetscapes, and large gardens. Though frost-sensitive when young, Jacaranda trees thrive in warm climates and are drought-tolerant once established.
Full Growing information from seed:
- Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing
- Use well-draining seed-starting mix
- Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press down
- Do not cover deeply — light aids germination
- Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy
- Maintain warmth (70–75°F / 21–24°C) during germination
- Germination typically occurs in 2–6 weeks
- Once seedlings develop true leaves, transplant into individual pots
- Grow in containers for the first year to protect from frost
- Transplant outdoors in full sun when well established
- Requires regular watering while young; drought-tolerant when mature
Stratification:
No cold stratification required — soaking seeds in warm water for 24 hours is recommended to soften the seed coat and improve germination.
Seed count: 25
Medicinal properties:
Jacaranda mimosifolia is primarily ornamental. In some traditional medicine systems, it has been used for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, but these uses are not widely supported by scientific studies and are not common in modern herbal medicine.
