Hyssop is an aromatic semi-evergreen shrub in the Lamiaceae or peppermint family native to Southern Europe, the Middle East, and the region surrounding the Caspian Sea. Due to its purported properties as an antiseptic, cough reliever, and expectorant, it has many uses in traditional herbal medicine. Hyssop is also known as Herbe de Joseph, Herbe Sacrée, Herbe Sainte, Hiope, Hisopo, Hissopo, Hyssopus officinalis, Hysope, Hysope Officinale, Jufa, Rabo De Gato, Ysop

Hyssop produces lovely sprigs of bright blue flowers, that are just irresistible to pollinators! If you grow any fruit or a vegetable garden, hyssop will welcome a plethora of beneficial insects who will help increase crop yields. Prune in early spring to encourage bushier growth.

  • Full sun; will tolerate part shade
  • Hyssop is easy to grow from seed; it readily self-sows.
  • Direct seed (recommended) In spring, direct seed about 1/4 in deep, one seed per inch in rows 18 in apart. Plants should eventually be given 12-15 in spacing; transplant into the garden after 4 true leaves have formed, and when all risk of frost has passed.
  • OR start seeds indoors; plant 1/4 in deep in flats i 8 weeks prior to last frost in well draining soil. Surface sow and water in lightly. Transplant outdoors after 4 leaves form and all risk of frost has passed. Spacing: 12-15 in apart
  • Germinates 5-21 days
  • Matures in 85 to 90 days
  • Harvest: harvest hyssop leaves as needed before the plant flowers. Pick flowers when the blooms are three-quarters open. Gather flowers in the morning when the dew has dried
