Full description

White Glitter Sea Holly (Eryngium planum) is a striking and architectural perennial known for its unique, thistle-like blooms in shimmering silvery-white tones. The cone-shaped flower heads are surrounded by spiky, star-like bracts that give the plant a bold, textured appearance. These eye-catching blooms rise on sturdy, branching stems above deeply cut, bluish-green foliage, adding height and structure to garden beds and borders.

Highly valued for its long-lasting flowers, White Glitter Sea Holly is excellent for both fresh and dried arrangements, retaining its colour and form exceptionally well. Its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils make it a low-maintenance choice for xeriscaping and sunny gardens. The flowers are also highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

This variety brings a modern, almost metallic shimmer to the garden and pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses and other sun-loving perennials.

Full Growing information from seed:

Eryngium planum can be started indoors or sown outdoors, but germination may be slow and benefits from pre-treatment.

To sow outdoors:

  • Sow seeds in fall for natural cold stratification, or in early spring after pre-treatment
  • Plant seeds on the soil surface or cover very lightly (no more than 0.5 cm deep)
  • Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil
  • Keep soil lightly moist until germination

To start indoors:

  • Cold stratify seeds for 2–4 weeks in a moist medium in the refrigerator
  • After stratification, sow seeds on the surface of a well-draining seed-starting mix and lightly cover
  • Maintain temperatures around 18–22°C (65–72°F)
  • Keep soil evenly moist but not wet
  • Germination may take 14–30 days or longer

Transplant seedlings carefully, as Eryngium develops a taproot and does not like root disturbance. Space plants approximately 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart.

White Glitter Sea Holly prefers poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soil and is highly drought-tolerant once established. Avoid overly rich soil, which can reduce flowering. Minimal watering is needed after establishment. Deadheading can extend bloom time.

Stratification:

Yes – Cold stratification recommended (2–4 weeks) for improved germination

Medicinal properties:

Eryngium planum has a history of traditional use in European herbal medicine. It has been valued for its mild diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and expectorant properties. The roots were sometimes used in herbal preparations to support urinary tract health and help relieve mild respiratory conditions such as coughs.

The plant has also been associated with digestive support and general tonic effects. Some traditional uses include supporting circulation and reducing inflammation. While it has historical medicinal applications, White Glitter Sea Holly is primarily grown today as an ornamental plant and should be used medicinally only with proper knowledge and guidance.
