Full Description
True Blue Cornflower, also known as Bachelor’s Button, is a classic cottage garden favorite prized for its vivid, electric-blue blooms and effortless charm. Growing to a height of 28–36 inches, these upright plants produce an abundance of fringed, button-like flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Their striking blue colour stands out beautifully in garden beds, borders, and wildflower plantings, and they also make excellent cut or dried flowers.
This variety is easy to grow and well-suited for beginner gardeners, offering reliable blooms throughout the growing season. Its airy structure adds movement and texture to the garden, while its drought tolerance makes it a resilient choice once established.
Medicinal Properties
Cornflower has a long history of traditional herbal use. The petals are known for their mild anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. They have been used in herbal infusions to support eye health (as a gentle eyewash), reduce irritation, and calm minor skin conditions. Cornflower is also sometimes included in teas for its mild digestive-supporting qualities and as a gentle diuretic. Additionally, it is valued cosmetically for toning and soothing sensitive skin.
Full Growing Information from Seed:
Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in fall for earlier blooms the following season. Cornflower prefers well-drained soil and does well even in poor soil conditions.
- Plant seeds ¼ inch deep
- Space seeds or thin seedlings to 6–12 inches apart
- Keep soil lightly moist until germination
- Germination typically occurs in 7–14 days
Once established, plants require minimal care. Deadheading spent flowers will encourage continuous blooming. Cornflowers are moderately drought-tolerant and do not require heavy fertilization. For cut flowers, harvest when blooms are just opening.
