Full description

Celosia Cockscomb ‘Josh’ (Celosia cristata) is a striking ornamental flower known for its unique, velvety blooms that resemble the folds of a rooster’s comb. The densely crested flowers form intricate, brain-like shapes in vibrant shades of red, making them a standout addition to garden beds, borders, and floral arrangements.

This variety is prized for its long-lasting blooms, both fresh and dried. The flowers maintain their vivid colour well into the season and are excellent for cut flower use or drying. With an upright growth habit and strong stems, Celosia ‘Josh’ adds bold texture and visual interest to any sunny garden space. It is also attractive to pollinators such as bees, making it both beautiful and beneficial.

Full Growing information from seed:

Sow seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost, or direct sow outdoors once the soil has warmed and all danger of frost has passed. Celosia seeds require warmth and light to germinate.

To sow indoors:

  • Use a fine seed-starting mix and lightly press seeds onto the surface without covering, as they need light to germinate
  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
  • Maintain a temperature of 20–25°C (68–77°F)
  • Germination typically occurs in 7–14 days

Once seedlings develop a few sets of true leaves, transplant them into larger containers or harden off before moving outdoors. Space plants approximately 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart.

To direct sow:

  • Prepare well-draining soil in a sunny location
  • Lightly press seeds into the soil surface and keep evenly moist until germination

Celosia prefers rich, well-drained soil and consistent watering. Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can lead to root issues. Deadheading spent blooms can encourage continued flowering throughout the season.

Medicinal properties

Celosia cristata has been used traditionally in herbal medicine, particularly in parts of Asia and Africa. The plant is known for its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used to help support digestive health, reduce bleeding, and assist with conditions such as diarrhea and dysentery.

The seeds and flowers are sometimes used in traditional remedies for eye health and to help soothe inflammation. Additionally, Celosia has been noted for its potential antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. While it has a history of traditional use, it is primarily grown as an ornamental plant and should be used medicinally with proper knowledge and guidance. SI
