Cattail - Narrow Leaf Cattail (Typha angustifolia) Non-GMO - Organically Grown - Flower

Type: Perennial

Flower Color: Brown cylindrical spikes (seed heads)

Latin Name: Typha angustifolia

Common Name: Narrow Leaf Cattail

Description:

Narrow Leaf Cattail is a hardy, upright aquatic plant recognized by its tall, slender leaves and distinctive brown flower spikes. A beautiful and functional addition to ponds, marshes, and wetland gardens, it provides habitat for wildlife and helps filter and oxygenate water. Typha angustifolia spreads by rhizomes and can naturalize quickly in the right environment, forming elegant stands of vertical green blades.

Growing Instructions:

Soil: Grows best in mucky, saturated soil or shallow standing water up to 12 inches deep.

Light: Full sun preferred, tolerates partial shade.

Watering: Keep soil or planting medium consistently wet. Can be grown in pots submerged in water gardens.

Sowing Indoors: Sow seeds on the surface of moist soil or seed-starting mix—do not cover, as light aids germination. Use a humidity dome or plastic cover to retain moisture.

Germination: 14–30 days at 70–75°F (21–24°C); keep evenly moist at all times.

Transplanting: Transplant to wetland areas, pond edges, or large containers once seedlings are established and the danger of frost has passed.

Stratification:

Seeds of Typha angustifolia benefit from cold moist stratification for improved germination.

Method: Place seeds in a damp paper towel or in moist sand/peat inside a sealed plastic bag.

Duration: Refrigerate at 35–40°F (1–4°C) for 30–60 days before sowing.

Seed count: 50
