What Are Bunching Onions?

Also known as Welsh onions, green onions, long green onions, Japanese bunching onions, spring onions, and scallions. Bunching Onions by any name are perennial, non-bulbing alliums that produce yummy green stems on small white roots, year after year!

Bunching onions do not come from bulbs like other onions; this onion is a perennial non-bulbing allium, which is grown for tasty stems and leaves used for flavouring many dishes. This variety is part of the same species as the common bulb onion, however, this scallion variety, also called “bunching” is due to the fact that they grow in small clusters, can be grown year-round, and never form a true bulb.

This is the same variety available at supermarkets, labeled as both scallions and green onions.

  • Transplant when all danger of frost has passed 10cm apart.
