Annual
Bells of Ireland is an elegant, upright annual known for its tall spires of cup-shaped, apple-green calyces that surround tiny white flowers. This stunning plant adds height, texture, and a unique visual appeal to flower beds, borders, and floral arrangements. It is often associated with good luck, making it a cherished addition to gardens and cut flower bouquets.
Growing Instructions:
• Light: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
• Soil: Well-draining, moderately fertile soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
• Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, it is somewhat drought-tolerant.
• Spacing: Plant 6–12 inches apart to allow for proper airflow.
• Height: Grows 24–36 inches tall.
• Support: Taller plants may need staking or support in windy areas.
Stratification & Germination:
• Cold Stratification: For best results, stratify seeds by placing them in a damp paper towel inside a sealed plastic bag and refrigerating for 1–2 weeks before sowing.
• Direct Sowing: Sow seeds outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil is workable. Cover lightly with soil, as light aids germination.
• Indoor Sowing: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Keep the soil temperature around 65–70°F (18–21°C). Germination typically occurs in 14–21 days.
• Transplanting: Once seedlings develop a strong root system, harden them off before transplanting outdoors.
Bells of Ireland are excellent for fresh and dried floral arrangements. For dried use, harvest when the calyces are fully developed and hang upside down in a well-ventilated area.
