Beet – Detroit Dark Red (Beta vulgaris) Heirloom

A favourite for over 100 years (1892); brought from Europe - remains the best popular standard variety and is sweet, tender and delicious. Dark red beet is smooth and globe shaped with an excellent flavour raw, steamed or baked; keeps well and is mildew resistant.

  • Soak seeds overnight

  • Start seeds indoors 4 weeks prior to last frost; plant 1 cm (½ in) deep, 5-10 cm (2-4 in) apart. For uniformly sized beets, thin carefully to 7-15cm (3-6 in) apart when seedlings are 5cm (2 in) tall. Eat thinned plants, roots and all.

  • Transplant in early spring when seedlings are strong and after frost danger has passed; spacing 1 cm deep

  • Direct seed 1 cm deep and 2 to 4 cm apart when frost danger has passed in rows 30-45cm (12-18 in) apart.

  • Germinates in 8 days. 55 days to maturity.

  • This is a second early variety with a large root, and has a dark red flesh.

  • Seed Count: 2gr
