Romano or Roma variety is a stringless gourmet bean with a very distinctive flavor! Tall plants and produce an abundance of wide, flat, 12.5-15 cm (5-6") pods. These bush beans are very dense when matured. This is an excellent variety to freeze. Romano beans have a Delicate green bean taste.

Special Note:  Romano bush bean pods typically all ripen in a short period of time making the harvest window shorter compared to pole beans that will produce throughout the growing season. If you want a continued Roma bean harvest, sow in successive periods such as every two weeks or so in spring; this will extend the harvest until the first fall frost.

  • Beans grow best when direct seeded. Direct sow bean seeds into the garden in spring anytime after the last frost has passed.
  • OR if you must, start seeds indoors 2-3 weeks prior to last frost date and transplant into the garden after all risk of frost has passed.
  • Space the seeds/seedlings roughly 3 inches apart in rows that are 20 to 36 inches apart.
  • Sow the seeds at a depth of 1 inch or a little deeper.
  • Provide 1 inch of water each week.
  • Germination: 8 to 10 days if the soil is warm, but it may take longer if the soil is cool.
  • Ensure weeding is carried out to enable good growth of seedlings; once the seedlings become established, their 1- to 2-foot-deep root systems can easily outcompete weeds for moisture and soil nutrients.
  • Roma bean plants require moderate moisture to produce a good yield. Provide 1 1/2 to 2 inches of water per week and adjust watering according to the weather by increasing during excess heat, and reducing when weather is cooler/moist.
  • when watering, avoid splashing leaves; excess moisture on the foliage can encourage disease.
  • Mulch: add a 2-inch-thick layer of mulch over the roots to help keep soil moist, particularly in hot, dry climates.
  • Matures 50 to 70 days after planting. Roma beans are typically ready to harvest in 59 days.
  • Pick beans that are broad, fleshy and green with well-developed beans inside.
  • Pull off at the top, rinse beans well and enjoy cooked or raw.
