Perennial

Description:

Allium christophii, commonly known as Star of Persia, is a striking perennial flowering plant in the Amaryllidaceae family. It is well-known for its spherical, star-like clusters of small, violet-purple flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. The flowers form a large globe-shaped head, making it an eye-catching addition to any garden or landscape. The foliage consists of narrow, sword-shaped leaves that fade as the plant matures. Star of Persia is native to Central Asia and is often cultivated for its unique appearance and drought-tolerant nature.

Growing Info:

Sun: Full sun (6+ hrs/day)

Soil: Well-draining, slightly alkaline preferred

Watering: Moderate; allow soil to dry between waterings

Height: 18–24 inches

Spacing: 6–8 inches apart

Bloom Time: Late spring to early summer

Sowing Instructions:

Sow in fall or early spring

Lightly press seeds into soil surface; do not bury deeply

For warmer climates, cold stratify seeds in moist medium (refrigerate for 4–6 weeks before sowing)

Germination may take several weeks to months

Bonus: Seed heads remain beautiful after flowering and can be used in dried arrangements. Low-maintenance, pest-resistant, and deer-tolerant.

Stratification (Cold Treatment):

Cold stratification is not typically necessary for Allium christophii, as it is hardy in USDA zones 4-9. However, if planting in a region with warmer winters, it’s recommended to store the bulbs in a cool, dry place for several weeks before planting to simulate a natural winter period. This mimics the cold treatment the bulbs would experience in their native habitat.
