Type: Annual
Description:
Scabiosa Starflower, also known as Drumstick Scabiosa or Paper Moon, is a stunning ornamental flower prized for its intricate, globe-shaped seed heads that resemble delicate starbursts. The pale blue to lavender blooms give way to papery, bronzed seed pods, making it a favorite for dried arrangements and fresh bouquets. This easy-to-grow variety attracts pollinators while offering long-lasting visual interest in the garden.
Growing Instructions:
• Soil: Prefers well-draining, moderately fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5.
• Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).
• Watering: Keep soil moist but not waterlogged; drought-tolerant once established.
• Spacing: Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing plants 9–12 inches apart.
• Germination: Seeds germinate in 7–14 days at soil temperatures of 65–75°F.
• Fertilization: Apply a balanced organic fertilizer or compost at planting and once during the growing season to encourage blooms.
• Support: Not required, but taller plants may benefit from light staking in windy areas.
Stratification & Seed Preparation:
No stratification is required. For best results, direct sow in early spring after the last frost, or start indoors 6–8 weeks before transplanting. Lightly cover seeds with soil, as they require some light to germinate. Harden off seedlings before moving them outdoors.
Seed count: 5
Harvesting:
Cut fresh flowers when fully open for bouquets, or allow seed pods to dry on the plant for ornamental use. To collect seeds, wait until pods turn papery and brown before harvesting.
