Growing Instructions:
- Begin by sowing seeds directly into well-drained soil in early spring or fall, spacing them evenly in rows or beds. Alternatively, start seeds indoors and transplant seedlings once they've developed sturdy roots.
- Sunlight: Provide full sun to partial shade for optimal growth. In warmer regions, partial shade can help protect tender leaves from scorching heat.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to promote steady growth and prevent wilting.
- Fertilization: Incorporate organic compost or a balanced fertilizer into the soil prior to planting to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth.
- Thinning: Once seedlings emerge, thin them to ensure adequate spacing, typically 6 to 12 inches apart, to encourage robust growth and prevent overcrowding.
- Maintenance: Monitor for pests and diseases, and promptly address any issues to safeguard the crop's health. Regularly harvest outer leaves to encourage continuous growth and prolong the harvest season.
- Harvesting: Begin harvesting tender leaves when they reach the desired size, typically 4-6 inches in length. Use sharp scissors or shears to snip leaves at the base, allowing the plant to continue producing new growth.
- For optimal germination, sow lettuce seeds in well-draining soil at a depth of 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged, during the germination period, which typically takes 7-14 days. Maintain a consistent temperature range of 60-70°F (15-21°C) to promote successful seedling emergence. Once seedlings have developed true leaves, thin them to the recommended spacing to ensure healthy growth.
