New England Aster ( Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) also known as the Michaelmas daisy is a perennial herbaceous plant native to central and eastern North America.

- Prefers full sun to part shade
- Sow seeds indoors 4-5 weeks before the last frost; sow thinly in a seed starting mix. When seedlings are strong enough to handle, transplant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed.
- OR direct sow seeds in the garden after frosts
- Sow thinly in rows 30-90 cm or 12-36 in apart; cover 3 times seeds diameter with soil.
- Keep area evenly moist
- Great for containers too!
- Divide in fall, fertilize and cut back in spring once established. Recommended that plants be divided every couple of years in the late fall to promote growth and blooms.
- Protecting from rabbits and deer will allow plants to reach 3 ft in first year and may even bloom. Asters can reach 5 ft in the second year.
