Full Description

Allium flavum, commonly known as Yellow Garlic, is an ornamental perennial grown for its nodding clusters of small, star-shaped yellow flowers. Blooming in mid to late summer, the flowers rise above narrow, blue-green foliage on slender stems. This allium forms clumps over time, attracting bees and butterflies, and is naturally resistant to deer and rabbits. Like other alliums, it contains sulfur compounds with mild antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, giving it minor medicinal value.

Full Growing Information From Seed:

  • Indoor Sowing: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before transplanting. Sow on soil surface, lightly cover (⅛ inch), keep soil moist, and maintain 18–21°C (65–70°F). Germination takes 2–4 weeks. Transplant seedlings once true leaves develop.
  • Outdoor Sowing: Sow in prepared soil in spring or fall. Lightly cover seeds and keep soil moist. Seedlings will form bulbs and gradually establish clumps.
  • Prefers well-drained soil and moderate watering during establishment. Once mature, it is drought tolerant and low-maintenance.

Stratification:

Not required, but a 2–4 week cold period can improve germination. Can be done by refrigerating seeds in slightly moist soil before sowing or by sowing outdoors in fall. J

Seed Count: 10 seeds
