Alfalfa is a cool-season perennial commonly grown for feeding livestock or as a cover crop, soil improvement, and conditioner.
Alfalfa is also a highly nutritious and natural source of nitrogen and is an extremely popular sprouting legume.
Alfalfa provides many environmental benefits including:
- it is a rich habitat for wildlife
- provides an insectary for diverse beneficial insects
- improves soil characteristics
- fixes atmospheric nitrogen
- traps sediments and takes up nitrate pollutants
- mitigates water and air pollution
- provides aesthetically pleasing open spaces.
- alfalfa's extensive root system nourishes both plants and soil, and is ideal for providing erosion control.
For Soil Improvement and Insect Benefits:
- Full sun.
- Sow seeds any time after the last frost in spring, and a month before the first frost in autumn.
- Since alfalfa roots quickly, it doesn’t require deep planting—only about 1/2 in (1 cm.) deep. Sprinkle the seeds evenly onto the soil and cover lightly with dirt
- Water seedlings as soon as they germinate.
- You should begin to see sprouts within seven to ten days. Once seedlings have reached about 6 to 12 in (15-31 cm.), thin them as needed to avoid overcrowding issues.
- Typically reaches a height of about 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 meters) when it's mature.
- Alfalfa produces high yields. It is also resistant to Anthracnose, aphanomyces root rot, bacterial wilt, fusarium wilt, phytophthora root rot and verticillium wilt.
