Tomato - Beefsteak - Cherokee Purple (Solanum lycopersicum) Purple Beef Steak Tomatoes Vegetable

Annual

Indeterminate

This is a fantastic tasting tomato...wonderful variety cultivated by a Native American Cherokee tribe, and is becoming very popular. This is a dusky rose to purple variety with green shoulders that appear when the fruits are mature. Plants produce numerous 12 oz large round beefsteak tomatoes. Fruits produced from midsummer to frost on vines that reach up to 9 ft long; fruits have a deep crimson red flesh and the the flavour is complex, rich and sweet.

NOTE: Although we generally do not offer hybrid seeds, this variety is a cross between two heirlooms: Cherokee Purple and Carbon. It is a fantastic tomato and is voted one of the most delicious tomatoes particularly for enjoying freshly picked.

Tomatoes love rich soil. Add some compost when setting out.

  • Full Sun
  • Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last frost. Sow 1/4 in deep and keep soil warm. Transplant into 1 in cells or 2 in pots at 1-2 leaf stage. NOTE: If the plants get leggy due to lack of light, when you transplant them out, bury more of the plant stem. It will not affect the growth and the plant will produce roots along the buried stem. Spacing: 80 cm apart.

  • Harden off plants for 4-5 days after risk of frost has passed, then transplant outdoors.
