Full Description
The White Camellia (Camellia japonica) is a classic, elegant evergreen flowering shrub prized for its beautiful white blooms and glossy, deep-green foliage. Its refined flowers bring a graceful, timeless quality to woodland gardens, shaded borders, patios and containers.
Camellias thrive in sheltered locations with acidic, well-draining soil and consistent moisture. Once established, they can develop into substantial, long-lived shrubs that provide year-round greenery and a spectacular floral display.
Camellia species also have a long history of traditional uses, and their leaves contain naturally occurring plant compounds with antioxidant activity. White Camellia is primarily grown as an ornamental flowering shrub.
Growing White Camellia from Seed 🌱
For best results, soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before stratification.
Stratification: Yes. Place seeds in slightly moist peat moss, vermiculite or another sterile growing medium inside a sealed bag or container. Refrigerate for approximately 3–4 weeks to help encourage germination.
After stratification, sow seeds approximately ½–1 inch (1–2.5 cm) deep in a rich, well-draining, acidic seed-starting or potting mix.
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Maintain a temperature of approximately 18–24°C (65–75°F).
Camellia seeds are naturally slow and sometimes irregular germinators. Germination can take several weeks to several months, so patience is important.
Provide seedlings with bright, indirect light or partial shade. Avoid strong midday and afternoon sun, which can scorch young foliage.
Once seedlings are well established and have developed 2–3 true leaves, carefully transplant them into individual pots, taking care not to disturb the developing roots more than necessary.
Growing On
Plant White Camellia in partial shade in rich, acidic, well-draining soil. Keep the soil evenly moist, particularly while plants are becoming established.
Mulch around the base of established plants to help conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature and protect the root zone. Keep mulch slightly away from the main stem.
Feed lightly in spring with a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants. If pruning is required, prune after flowering to maintain the desired shape and encourage healthy, bushy growth.
Please Note:
Camellias grown from seed can show natural variation from the parent plant. Seeds collected from a white-flowering Camellia japonica are not guaranteed to produce an identical white-flowering plant. Seed-grown camellias can also take several years to reach flowering maturity.
