Tarragon is a highly aromatic, perennial herb prized for its delicate anise-like flavour.
Unlike Russian Tarragon, French Tarragon is sterile and does not produce viable seeds; it requires propagation through cuttings or root division. The variety we offer here is a great alternative for French Tarragon.
Tarragon is a culinary favourite commonly used in french cuisine, and enhances dishes such as sauces, salads, and meats with its distinct liquorice undertones.
Growing Instructions
• Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost
• Seeds need light to germinate - press the seeds lightly into moist soil and cover lightly; keep the soil consistently moist.
• Soil: Prefers well-draining, sandy or loamy soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Avoid heavy, clay-based soils
• Transplant the seedlings outdoors after the last frost.
• Spacing: Plant the seedlings 18-24 inches apart to allow for good air circulation.
• Light: Thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
• Watering: Keep soil moderately moist but avoid overwatering. Tarragon is drought-tolerant once established.
• Fertilization: Minimal feeding is needed; a light application of compost or organic fertilizer in spring encourages growth.
• Harvesting: Harvest fresh leaves throughout the growing season. For best flavor, pick before the plant flowers. Dry or freeze leaves for later use.
This low-maintenance herb is a must-have for any kitchen garden, offering a refined flavour unmatched by other tarragon varieties.
