Full Description:

Fata Morgana Scabiosa is a romantic, heirloom-style bloom known for its soft, vintage tones ranging from creamy apricot and blush to dusty rose and muted mauve. Each pincushion-shaped flower sits atop slender, wiry stems, gently swaying in the breeze and adding an airy, whimsical quality to garden beds and bouquets. This variety is highly sought after for its unique, ever-changing colour palette and exceptional performance as a cut flower. Long blooming and pollinator-friendly, Fata Morgana attracts bees and butterflies while producing a continuous supply of blooms throughout the growing season. Its delicate appearance belies its resilience, making it a charming yet reliable addition to any flower garden.

Growing Information from Seed:

Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow outdoors once the soil has warmed. Sow seeds about 3 mm (⅛ inch) deep in well-draining soil. Keep soil lightly moist during germination, which typically occurs within 10–14 days. Transplant seedlings outdoors after frost risk has passed, spacing plants 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart. Scabiosa prefers moderately fertile, well-drained soil and benefits from consistent watering, though it is somewhat drought tolerant once established. Regular cutting or deadheading encourages continuous blooms. Support may be beneficial in windy areas due to its tall, slender stems.

Stratification:

No stratification required.

Medicinal Properties:

Scabiosa atropurpurea has historical use in traditional herbal practices, where related species were used for their mild anti-inflammatory and skin-supporting properties, particularly in treating minor skin conditions. However, this variety is primarily cultivated as an ornamental flower and is not commonly used medicinally today.
