Lotus – White Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) Non-GMO – Organically Grown – Flower

Perennial (in appropriate climates, often grown as an annual or overwintered indoors in colder regions)

Full sun

Sacred Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is a stunning aquatic perennial revered for its large, fragrant blooms and graceful, water-floating foliage. Often symbolizing purity and spiritual awakening, this plant holds deep cultural and religious significance in many Eastern traditions. Rising majestically above the water on tall stalks, while its round, water-repellent leaves create a striking visual contrast. Beyond its beauty, the lotus also produces edible seeds and rhizomes, and is commonly grown in ponds, water gardens, and containers with still water.

Full Growing information from seed:

  • Seed Preparation (Scarification): Lotus seeds have a very hard outer shell that needs to be scarified (nicked or sanded) to allow water to penetrate and germination to occur.

    • Gently file or sand one end of the seed (the end with a small "dot") until you see the lighter inner seed coat. Be careful not to go too deep and damage the embryo.

    • Alternatively, use pliers or a small knife to carefully nick the seed coat on the same end.

  • Soaking: Place scarified seeds in a container of lukewarm, non-chlorinated water. Change the water daily to prevent mold growth.

  • Germination: Seeds should swell and sprout within a few days to a couple of weeks. Remove any seeds that float and don't swell, as they may not be viable.

  • Potting: Once the first few leaves appear and roots are visible (usually when the sprout is a few inches long):

    • Prepare a pot (without drainage holes, or with drainage holes sealed) with heavy clay loam soil (avoid potting mix with perlite or vermiculite as it floats).

    • Gently press the sprouted seed into the soil, covering the roots but leaving the green shoot exposed.

    • Slowly add about 1-2 inches of water above the soil line.

  • Placement: Place the pot in a sunny location where the water temperature remains consistently warm (ideally 20-30°C / 70-85°F).

  • Water Depth: As the plant grows, gradually increase the water depth. For bonsai varieties, keep the water level just above the soil or a few inches deep in a larger container.

  • Fertilizing: Once true leaves appear and the plant is established, begin fertilizing with aquatic plant fertilizer tablets, pressed into the soil away from the plant's roots. Fertilize every 2-4 weeks during the growing season.

  • Winter Care (if applicable): In colder climates, bring pots indoors before the first frost. Store dormant tubers in a cool, dark, frost-free location, keeping the soil slightly moist.

No, scarification and soaking are required, but not cold stratification. A
