Full Description

Ray’s Golden Campion is a striking and unusual selection of campion, featuring glowing golden-yellow foliage paired with vivid, magenta-pink blooms. Growing 24–36 inches tall, this eye-catching plant adds bold contrast and colour to garden beds and borders. The soft, velvety leaves create a luminous backdrop that makes the bright flowers stand out even more dramatically.

Blooming in late spring through summer, this variety is highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Its upright growth habit and drought tolerance make it a reliable, low-maintenance choice for cottage gardens, xeriscapes, and naturalized plantings. It may self-seed gently, helping to establish a long-lasting presence in the garden.

Medicinal Properties

Traditionally, species of Lychnis have been used in folk herbal practices, though they are not widely used in modern herbal medicine. Some historical uses include mild astringent and soothing applications for minor skin irritations. However, Golden Campion is primarily grown for ornamental purposes rather than medicinal use.

Full Growing Information from Seed

Seeds can be sown indoors or directly outdoors. For best results, sow in early spring or late fall.

  • Surface sow or lightly cover seeds with a thin layer of soil (requires light for germination)
  • Space or transplant seedlings 12–18 inches apart
  • Keep soil lightly moist until germination
  • Germination typically occurs in 10–21 days

Plants prefer well-drained soil and do well in average to poor soils. Once established, they are drought-tolerant and require minimal care. Deadheading can encourage extended blooming, though leaving some flowers to go to seed will promote natural reseeding.

Stratification

Not required, but a short cold period may improve germination
