Zinnia – Purple Prince (Zinnia elegans) Purple Dahlia Flowered Zinnias Cutting Flower

Annual

Height: 30 to 40 in

Large, robust and richly toned blooms, with contrasting yellow centres, make this heirloom one of the favourites of the dahlia flowered zinnias; highly recommended in a 1949 flower book! Perfect for cottage style gardens and borders and work very well for container gardening. Excellent for cutting flower gardens!

Zinnias tolerate drought, but performs best when watered regularly. Keep moist, watering only in the morning. Avoid wetting the leaves.

  •  Full sun
  • Zinnias do not respond well to transplanting; recommend direct sow outdoors after the last frost has passed, after last spring frost, when night temperatures remain above 50°F.
  • OR start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before last frost, plant 1/16 to 1/4 in deep in coir pots with well draining soil. Transplant to outdoors when the soil temperature is 21 to 26°C (70 to 80°F) Seeds should germinate in 5 to 24 days. Best to just cover Zinnia seeds lightly.
  • Pinch back when seedlings reach about 6 to 8 in in height to encourage bushy growth, and deadhead regularly for a midsummer to frost show.
  • Ideal cutting flower as it has a very long vase life.
  • Spacing of 1.5 to 2 ft between plants.
  • Mix in an organic, all-purpose granular fertilizer soon after planting out, and again when flowering begins
  • Attracts honey, bumble and solitary bees
  • Matures in 75 to 90 days
  • Harvest: Grab the stem about 8 in. below the flower and gently shake. If the stem is droopy or bends much at all, it is not quite ready; if the stem is stiff and remains upright, it is ready to harvest.
  • Cut flowers: If flower preservative is added to the water, zinnias should last 7to see10 days in the vase.
  • Seed Count: 10
