Wild bergamot, also known as bee balm, is a wildflower in the mint family and is a widespread and abundant native plant in much of North America. Gorgeous addition to cottage gardens, cutting flower gardens and healing gardens. This plant produces prolific fragrant pink to lavender summer blooming blossoms and looks awesome in borders; often used as a honey plant, medicinal plant, and makes a great pollinator attractant.
- Full sun to part shade
- Prefers well drained soil and tolerant to a variety of soil conditions if moist
- Direct seed after all risk of frost has passed
- OR start seeds indoors 8 weeks before the last frost date. Cover seed. Germinates at 18C; transplant outdoors after risk of frost has passed. Spacing 30 cm.
- Can self seed
- Harvesting: seeds can be harvested 1-3 weeks after the flowers bloom; bend the stems over a paper bag - when brown seeds drop in, they are ready to harvest.
- Excellent cutting flowers; also dried flowers which can be used in tea.
