Linaria purpurea ‘Brown’s White’ is a beautiful, elegant perennial producing tall, graceful spikes covered in delicate pure-white, snapdragon-like flowers. Its airy growth habit and fine blue-green foliage make it a gorgeous addition to cottage gardens, perennial borders, pollinator gardens, cut-flower gardens and naturalized plantings.

This is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant perennial once established and performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. It prefers dry to average soil and does not tolerate consistently wet or waterlogged conditions.

Growing From Seed

Sow seeds directly outdoors in spring once the soil can be worked, or start indoors approximately 6–8 weeks before transplanting outdoors.

Scatter seeds over the surface of moist, well-drained seed-starting mix and gently press them into the soil. Do not cover deeply — the seeds benefit from light to germinate.

Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Place seeds in a bright location and maintain approximately 18–22°C (65–72°F) for germination.

Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant carefully into individual pots. Harden plants off before planting outdoors.

When direct sowing outdoors, choose a sunny location with excellent drainage. Keep the seedbed moist until seedlings are established.

Stratification

No cold stratification required.

The seeds can be surface sown without a mandatory cold-treatment period. Light is beneficial for germination, so avoid burying the seeds deeply.

Garden Notes

Linaria purpurea ‘Brown’s White’ is especially suited to dry gardens, cottage gardens, rock gardens and low-water landscapes. Its tall flower spikes add height and movement to perennial beds while attracting bees, butterflies and other beneficial pollinating insects.

Avoid planting in areas where water regularly collects or where the soil remains saturated.

Medicinal Information

There are no established medicinal uses for Linaria purpurea that we recommend. While some other species within the Linaria genus have traditional medicinal uses, this particular species should not be consumed or used medicinally.
