Description

White Boston Lettuce is a classic butterhead lettuce prized for its beautifully soft, tender leaves, delicate flavour and buttery texture.

Plants form attractive, loosely rounded heads with broad, gently cupped leaves. Despite the name “White Boston,” the leaves are typically a beautiful light to medium green, with tender, pale interiors as the heads mature.

Its mild flavour and incredibly tender texture make White Boston an excellent lettuce for fresh salads, sandwiches, wraps, burgers and beautiful garden-to-table meals.

Butterhead lettuces are particularly loved by home gardeners because you don’t necessarily have to wait for a full head to mature. Young outer leaves can be harvested as needed, or plants can be allowed to develop into complete heads for harvesting.

White Boston thrives during the cooler temperatures of spring and fall, making it a wonderful choice for extending the vegetable gardening season.

For an ongoing supply of fresh lettuce, sow small batches every 2–3 weeks while temperatures remain cool.

Growing White Boston Lettuce From Seed

White Boston Lettuce can be started indoors or direct sown into the garden.

For an early spring crop, start seeds indoors approximately 4–6 weeks before your last expected frost, or sow directly outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked.

Sow seeds approximately ⅛–¼ inch (3–6 mm) deep. Lettuce seeds should not be planted deeply.

Keep the soil consistently moist during germination. Lettuce has relatively shallow roots, so regular watering is important for producing tender, sweet leaves.

Once seedlings emerge, thin them to provide adequate room for mature heads to develop.

For the best flavour and texture, grow lettuce in cool conditions with consistent moisture. Hot, dry weather can cause lettuce to bolt, which means the plant begins producing a flower stalk and the leaves may become bitter.

Plant another crop in late summer for a beautiful fall harvest.

Succession Planting

For a continuous supply of fresh lettuce, sow another small crop approximately every 2–3 weeks during cool weather.

As summer temperatures rise, choose a location with some afternoon shade. Resume sowing in late summer as temperatures begin cooling for a fall crop.

Stratification

No cold stratification is required.

White Boston Lettuce can be sown directly into moist soil. Lettuce prefers cooler temperatures for germination, so avoid excessively hot soil when starting seeds.

Harvesting

For baby lettuce, begin harvesting tender outer leaves while plants are still young.

For mature heads, harvest once the lettuce has developed a nicely filled-out butterhead form but before the plant begins to bolt.

Harvest in the cool morning whenever possible for beautifully crisp, fresh leaves.
