Full description:

Vipers Bugloss, also known as Echium vulgare, is a striking wildflower with vibrant blue to purple blooms that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its tall spikes and bristly leaves make it a dramatic addition to wildflower meadows, cottage gardens, and naturalized landscapes. Traditionally, parts of the plant have been used in herbal medicine for respiratory and skin ailments, though it should be used with caution due to pyrrolizidine alkaloids in the plant.

Full Growing information from seed:

  • Sow seeds directly in the garden in spring or early fall.
  • Lightly cover seeds with soil; they need light to germinate.
  • Keep soil moist but not waterlogged until germination (10–20 days).
  • Thin seedlings to 12–18 inches apart once they are strong enough.
  • Prefers well-draining soil; tolerates poor, sandy soils.
  • Water moderately; drought tolerant once established.
  • Deadhead flowers to encourage prolonged bloom.
  • Can self-seed easily in favorable conditions.

Stratification: Optional – cold stratification for 2–4 weeks can improve germination rates.
