Full Description

Catalpa is a fast-growing, ornamental tree known for its large, heart-shaped leaves and showy clusters of white, orchid-like flowers marked with purple and yellow. Blooming in late spring to early summer, the fragrant blossoms are highly attractive to pollinators. After flowering, long, slender seed pods develop, giving the tree its nickname “cigar tree.”

Reaching heights of 40–70 feet at maturity, Catalpa creates a broad, spreading canopy that provides excellent shade. Its bold foliage and unique flowers make it a standout feature in landscapes. Adaptable and hardy, Catalpa tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including poor or compacted soils, making it a resilient choice for many growing environments.

Medicinal Properties

Historically, parts of the Catalpa tree have been used in traditional herbal practices. The bark and leaves were sometimes used for their mild laxative and sedative properties, as well as in remedies for respiratory issues such as coughs. Poultices made from the leaves have been used externally for swelling and skin irritations. However, modern medicinal use is limited, and the plant is primarily valued as an ornamental tree.

Full Growing Information from Seed

Seeds can be sown indoors or directly outdoors in spring.

  • Soak seeds in warm water for 12–24 hours before planting to improve germination
  • Plant seeds ¼ inch deep in well-draining soil
  • Space seedlings generously to allow for tree growth
  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
  • Germination typically occurs in 10–21 days

Catalpa prefers well-drained soil but is highly adaptable to various soil types. Once established, it is tolerant of drought and urban conditions. Young trees benefit from regular watering and protection from strong winds.
