Biennial

Height 24 in

  • Starting seeds indoors:plant the seeds in a flat bed of individual seed plugs with two to three seeds in each plug. Once the seeds have sprouted, thin them to one seedling per plug. When strong enough to handle transplant to rich, loosened, moist soil.
  • Chard grows best in full sun, but will tolerate light shade in summer. A liquid fertilizer or compost tea applied twice during summer will keep chard growing well.
  • For direct sowing: to speed germination, soak seeds in water for 24 hours prior to planting. Sow seeds ½ to 1 inch deep, 2 to 6 inches apart, in rows 18 inches apart. Continue planting seeds at 10-day intervals for a month. Chard is best treated as a “cut-and-come-again” crop.
